Regulator necklaces have gained popularity among recreational divers, offering a convenient way to keep your regulator within reach. While ready-made rubber versions are available, you can craft one from bungee cord (shock cord) with some skill and patience. Here's a step-by-step guide to creating your own regulator necklace:
Gather Your Materials:
Start with a 3mm (0.08 inch) shock cord, approximately 60cm (2 feet) in length.
Initial Knot:
Hold one end of the shock cord in each hand. Pass the left end under your forefinger and wrap it around both your finger and the other end, repeating this process twice.
Loop Formation:
Remove your finger from the loop and pass the left end through the loop, moving from left to right.
Tighten the Knot:
Pull the knot tight, ensuring it's secure.
Create Space:
Repeat the knot-tying process with the other hand, leaving a space of approximately 50mm (2 inches) between the two knots. This space is where your regulator's mouthpiece will fit. Adjust the distance as needed to ensure your regulator fits comfortably into the loop you've created.
Secure the Loop:
Once you've achieved the desired fit, tighten the loop by pulling the long ends to ensure the knots are secure.
Final Touch:
Trim any excess shock cord and melt the ends to prevent fraying.
This DIY approach to crafting a regulator necklace provides divers with a practical accessory for their gear. It allows quick access to the regulator while keeping it close at hand during your dive.
