The second stage has a spring holding the valve shut, in an unbalanced second stage, the forces on each side of the spring are different; affecting how easy it is to breathe.
In a balanced second stage (like the Aquatec RG-3100S), some of the intermediate pressure is directed to one side of the spring to make it easier to breathe, especially if breathing hard or at depth.
